Ponchos and Ruanas / Ageless Style

How Do You Feel About Ponchos And Ruanas?

Are you a fan? Do you love them or don’t even think about them? I am guessing that many of you may be thinking, just what is a ruana? Well, I am here to explain the differences between ponchos and ruanas and why I love them both.

Living in Florida with its mild winters, I have a collection of both ruanas and ponchos. In winter they are the perfect replacement for a heavy coat. And in summer the lightweight versions are perfect for an extra layer in the air-conditioning.

In colder climates, ponchos and ruanas make a stylish warm third layer.

Ruana

Basically, a ruana is what is commonly referred to by us ladies as a wrap. It is flat and opens down the center. And comes in all weights of materials for all seasons.

One of the things that I love about ponchos and ruanas is that they fold flat and are easy to handle when not wearing them. I often keep one folded in my car just in case of a sudden temperature drop.

According to Wikipedia, a ruana is a poncho-style outer garment originating in Venezuela and Colombia.  It is made from a square or rectangular blanket with a center opening for the head to go through. Plus there is a slit down the front to the hem.

Perviously, I shared a post detailing the difference between Ruanas and Ponochos.

Ponchos

Wikipedia states that ponchos in their simplest form are a single sheet of fabric with an opening in the center for the head a sometimes a hood. They originated Pre-Inca era and are associated with different areas by local names.

A lightweight cashmere poncho such as this one is perfect for traveling. It’s warm and not too heavy. And best of all, I can fold it and drop it into my travel bag when not needed.

  2. I had never heard of a ruana before but after reading your description it seems that many of my wraps are really ruanas. I love that they fold up neatly and take up little space. I can see why you have a whole collection of them!

    • I first heard the term ruana while shopping in a boutique.
The salesperson used the term ruanas. And so my education began.😂
Isn’t it interesting how once we hear a new term, it starts popping up all over?
No matter the name, Ido love my wraps❣️

    • The wonderful thing about the ivory one is that it’s reversible. S
Two wraps in one! Great for taking in trips🤍

  3. I learned something new today!!!! I’d never heard of a ‘ruana’ and now I realize that’s what I was styling today too! I completely agree, that they are truly great little layer to add and remove as needed, while also looking super stylish. I would think in your climate its absolutely perfect for cooler days or even evenings. Love both looks, but especially the first one.

    • The white ruana is reversible, and that is such a plus. Two wraps in one!

The gray one is cashmere. It is perfect for travel Because it is cashmere, it is so warm yet lightweight enough to fold easily into my carry-on tote,

  4. My friend, you are so chic and put together in your ponchos. I have tried to wear a poncho and knocked everything on the floor that I passed by!! I am not a graceful gal at all. Love the almost monochromatic look with the lighter wrap. Perfect for chilly days. Your poncho becomes a statement piece rather than a wrap covering your clothes.

    • My dear Leslie, you are so adorable. Thank you for your stopping by today and for all your kind words.

    • The term Ruana has been popping up in print ads a lot lately. Any name we give it the rauna/wrap is a wonderful addition to our wardrobe.

    • Yes, raunas and ponchos are perfect for our Florida climate. We are only looking for a light- weight third layer during our mild winter season.
