Welcome to August, and as my Grandma used to say, “It’s The Dog Days Of Summer.” The term “Dog Days” refers to a period of scorching hot and humid weather occurring toward the end of summer. It’s a time to embrace the last moments of summer at a slower and easy pace. Because Mother Nature is heated up and fall is waiting around the corner, now is the perfect time to savor this last month of summer and enjoy the Dog Days of Summer.

A few years back, I shared a post explaining the origins of the Dog Days of Summer. And so, as the August temps are extremely hot, it is an excellent time to think about ways to enjoy these Dog Days of Summer.

Dress In Cool Clothes
First and foremost, dress in cool clothing. Wear items made of natural fabrics that breathe. Think – cotton and linen. Now is the time for those loose and flowing outfits. Remember, comfort is essential to enjoying these last days of summer.
Twiggy Slide Sandals – Tommy Bahama Midi – Dress
Island Gauze™ Midi Dress – Raffi Slide Sandals
These comfy and cool dresses are from my Tommy Bahama collection. The white gauze dress is currently on SALE. I love it as a stand-alone dress and also a swimsuit coverup. Unfortunately, the blueprint is sold-out but available in several different prints.
Eat Refreshing Foods And Enjoy Cool Drinks
Stay Hydrated!!!!
As a rule, eating foods that are easy to digest and hydrate during hot weather is best. Fresh fruits such as watermelon and vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers provide energy and fight the feelings of fatigue.
Remember to drink lots of water and cold drinks.
Along with the closing for the summer season comes harvest time. And that means loads of delicious fruits and vegetables fresh from the garden and farmers’ markets. Plan to stop by a local food stand or visit a weekend farmers market.
See a Summer Movie
Hot summer afternoons are ideal for spending an afternoon inside the air-conditioned theater and seeing the latest blockbuster release. The popcorn is so good too!
Head To Some Water or Take a Swim
No argument; a swimming pool is terrific. But being around water is terrific if you can’t access a swimming pool.
You can visit a local park with a lake or water fountains. Being out in nature and near the water is refreshing. And it is terrific if you are lucky enough to live near the local lake for boating and swimming or near the beach.
Take A Trip
Do you still have plans for some vacation time? Well, now is the perfect time for that getaway before the hustle and bustle of the fall season set in. You will find the warmest beach waters and the coolest refreshing mountain air just waiting for your arrival.
Sit On The Porch Or In The Backyard
And if these Dog Days of Summer find you wanting to relax and enjoy these last days of summer at home, then that is just fine! Grab your favorite cool drink, head to the porch or backyard, and enjoy!
There are so many ways to Enjoy the Dog Days of Summer. So much depends on where you live and your lifestyle. I would love to hear your thoughts and plans for the month of August. Just drop a quick comment down below.
Until Next time!

Your pups are beautiful! We’ve been enjoying the neighborhood pool in the mornings the past 2 weeks: much more enjoyable! And I have been really enjoying my summer wardrobe this year. I am really rotating through all the things!

Hi Mireille,
My pups thank you!❣️🐾🐾
A morning swim is a terrific way to start the day. And I am sure it is a fabulous outlet of some of your boys summer energy.
Great tips Rosemary! We have to savor these last weeks of summer. Love your looks here too! x Kim
Kim,
Here in Florida, we have severalbmote months of summer weather with all the humidity. But no worries, the sunshine is why we are here.🌞
Oh a swim with dogs sounds fabulous! And you have such gorgeous dogs!
Nancy,
The boys🐾🐾thank you. Swimming in August is a great pastime for a summer day.
Hello Rosemary,
Is there a specific recipe you like for the sun dried tomato salad you mentioned?
My salad is typically a combination of what I have on hand in the pantry.
But, my original recipe came from a pin by Everyday Delicious on Pinterest. It is linked in the photo caption.
Love the first two dresses, they really look cool. We have no idea in the UK when we’re going to have summer or winter, we joke that we have 4 seasons in one day. Thanks for linking up with #pocolo
I can understand the 4 seasons in a day statement. Here in Florida is sunshine and rain.
Thanks for stopping by.
Rosemary, this is a wonderful article. I love being “porch people” in the summer. Your fur babies are precious.
Visiting today from PoCoLo #11
Hi Paula,
Thank you for visiting via my front porch today. We love our porches and many days we move with the sun, – Front to back to upstairs. 🤣
