Mother’s Day in 2021 will be celebrated on Sunday, May 9th. So, now is the time to be thinking about what kind of gift you would like to give to your Mom. Now, you may decide to give her some spring flowers and send her a special card. Maybe you will take her out to a delicious dinner which she doesn’t have to cook! Or you may want to give her a personal gift that she will know you choose especially for her. If so, I have a little help for you here in today’s post. A Brief History of Mother’s Day
For me, the holiday has a very special connection to my past. Why? Because my family comes from the small mountain town of Grafton in northeastern West Virginia. It is the birthplace of the first Mother’s Day back in 1908. I wrote about it can it in a previous post.
And so as children, we learned the story of how Anna Marie Jarvis was seeking a way to honor the memory of her mother who had died. She asked her church to honor all mothers as a tribute to the anniversary of her mother’s death. In 1908 that service became the first Mother’s Day. And in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution that declared the second Sunday in May as the official Mother’s Day, nationwide.

I had no idea that was the history of the first Mother’s Day. TFS!
Hi Amy,
Thanks for stopping by Distinctly Southern Style today!
Yes, Mother’s Day really did start with one daughter’s wish to express love for her deceased Mother. Isn’t that a wonderful thought? Mother’s Day is an authentic real holiday, not a made-up occasion on the calendar to sell cards and candy. ❤️

I’m not sure if we can visit my mother in law this year du to Covid, we still have a lot of restrictions. But these are some lovely ideas!
Hi Nancy!
I hope that it works out that you can visit with your mother-in-law this year.
If not that’s ok…it is a blessing to know that she is well.

There are a lot of items in this list that I would like for myself too!
And that is the idea. Sometimes when I think the shopping is so hard, I remember to think about new items that I might like.
