February always feels like a gentle pause. It’s still winter, but here in the South, especially in Florida, there’s a softness to the season. Mornings are cooler, afternoons invite us outside, and life feels a little slower in the best way. This month is all about leaning into simple joys, cozy routines, and those everyday moments that make life feel especially sweet.
Hello, February
It’s hard to believe that January has come and gone. Now it’s time to welcome February. I’m ready to enjoy the sweetness of Valentine’s and the serenity that February brings.
February feels calm and reflective
You ask why February feels calm and reflective to me. I think it is because it sits in that quiet space on the calendar and in our minds. The rush and noise of the holidays are now behind us, and the fresh-start, get-things-done energy of January has softened into a gentler pace. Now, there’s less pressure to begin, achieve, or celebrate in big ways.We have room to pause and settle in.

It’s also a slower month by design. The days are shorter, fewer commitments, and the cooler weather invites us inward, both physically and emotionally. February encourages reflection, rest, and appreciation for the small comforts of life. A simple reset without urgency. In many ways, it’s a breathing space before the energy of spring arrives.
Setting intentions without pressure

Now in February, the pressure of January’s New Year’s resolutions and intentions has had time to settle. We can calmly evaluate what is working and what is not. Quietly, we can move into the next season with grace instead of expectation. Gently, we consider how we want to feel rather than living from a list of things we must accomplish. This kind of intention leaves room for flexibility, rest, and a real life. Growth doesn’t have to be loud or fast to be meaningful. In February, intentions can be soft and simple, guiding us quietly while giving us permission to slow down, adjust, and simple be present where we are.
Winter Living in the South
Florida Winter Days – Light Layers and Outdoor Living
I am fortunate to commute and live between both North Florida and South Florida. Although I am in the same state, the weather conditions can vary to extremes. Here in North Florida, we are above the frost line, which runs from Tampa to Vero Beach. This means that we can get frosty mornings in Gainesville and colder temps. In South Florida, the temperatures can drop, and we feel the chill. Lucky us, we do get a lot of sunshine. I have found that dressing is layers is always my best bet when planning my outfits
.This outfit was shopped straight from my own closet by Frank and Elaine, and it’s one I’ve had and loved for a couple of years now. It’s been a go-to for airline flights, workout sessions, and those back-and-forth trips between Gainesville and Boca Raton. It’s comfortable, polished, and endlessly versatile. While it is a bit on the pricier side, I scored mine on sale, and it has more than earned its place. It’s the kind of pieces that wears well, travels beautifully, and will remain a true staple in my wardrobe for years to come.
Morning Coffee On The Porch

I’ve truly missed our Front Porch Coffee Chats—the slow mornings, the familiar rhythm of a warm mug in hand, and the feeling of sitting down together with no agenda other than connection. Those posts have always felt like an open invitation to pause, reflect, and share whatever is on our hearts in that season. So I’m happy to say they’re coming back. I plan to revive our front porch coffee chats as a monthly blog post once again, creating a cozy space to talk about life, home, style, and all the little moments in between. Let’s plan on pulling up a chair, pouring yourself a cup, and settling in together—just like old times.
What I’m Loving Right Now
A Go-to Winter Outfit
This has truly been my go-to outfit through the holidays and just as perfect for a night out—like a quiet birthday dinner celebrating my hubby. The skirt from J Crew is the only new addition; everything else was happily shopped from my own closet, which I always love.
The good news? The skirt is currently on sale, and I’ve also linked comparable tops and shoes that are marked down too. Just another wonderful aspect of February—sales that make getting dressed even sweeter.
Something Bringing Extra Joy Lately

Friends, you may not be aware that a little bundle of joy moved into our home over the Christmas holidays. Please help me welcome Spritz, our Sheltie puppy. He’s tiny, fluffy, and already has us wrapped completely around his paw.
Bringing Spritz home has been such a happy adventure. From those curious first sniffs around the house to his wiggly excitement every time he sees us, it’s clear he will fill our days with laughter, love, and plenty of puppy energy.
Why the name Spritz? Well, we wanted something playful and cheerful that reflected his personality. To us, it captures the joy of sunshine, sparkling moments, and a zest for life…all the things this little pup already brings into our home.

I am excited to share his adventures with you here on Distinctly Southern Style. From Sunday porch mornings to Saturday Farmers Markets, and cozy evenings, Spritz will no doubt be adding his own paw print to our Southern lifestyle.
Entertainment for Cosy Evenings
Hubby and I have been enjoying cozy evenings catching up on the Prime TV series The Night Manager. It had been long enough that we’d completely forgotten much of the plot from the first season, so rewatching it has been a treat—full of twists, tension, and “oh yes, now I remember” moments. We’re savoring it all over again and looking forward to diving into season two in February, which feels like the perfect little winter TV treat to anticipate.

Oh my gosh! I live in Gainesville too! And you are so right! We can definitely get some frosty mornings! 22* this morning is way out of my comfort zone, luckily it doesn’t last long. Spritz is adorable and I’m sure will be such a joy.
Janet,
Oh my gosh, no way—hi, neighbor! 😊 Yes, these frosty Gainesville mornings can be such a shock… 22° is brutal by our standards, even if it doesn’t last long.
And thank you! Spritz is already such a little joy—hard to stay grumpy when i’ve got a sweet little guy like this around. 🐾❄️
PS. He is loving this cold snap today. I’m getting my steps in letting him and out. Small blessings❣️
I was so happy to see a post in my email, Rosemary! I hope you’ve been well. I remember seeing Spritz on Instagram! February brings my husband’s birthday so I have a little surprise planned for him…very little because he really doesn’t like surprises. I’m hoping for some DIY in the house to make it feel more like me…maybe some granite countertops or quartz…I’m not sure yet as well as some mouldings. And, maybe new paint while I’m at it!

So fun that you remembered Spritz from Instagram 🐾 February is special for us as well with my husband’s birthday coming up in a few weeks. I am working on a few surprises for him too.
I am currently shopping the websites for ideas for a couple rugs for the Boca house. ( I won’t be purchasing until Spritz is past his chewing stage.) How soon we forget all the puppy stages.😉
I’ve been loving seeing pictures of Spritz on IG and so glad to visit your blog today. I do feel like February is a calmer month (even though tennis season started this week for my son) with that in between weather, and no major holidays on the horizon. I need to get back to my front porch on the warmer days!

Hi Mireille, Thank you so much — I love that you’ve been following along with Spritz on Instagram! February really does have that calm, in-between feel, even with busy seasons with sports and thoughts of spring starting up. And yes to porch days — there’s nothing better than soaking up those warmer afternoons. The temps here in Florida have definitely been winter weather, but our afternoons are warming up a bit.
You’re right, February does seem quiet and reflective! I love seeing the first signs of spring, the bulbs pushing through. Some lovely outfits here. How cute is Spritz? Thanks for linking at #TuesdayTwirl
Hi, Gail,
Thanks for hosting #Tuesday Twirl. I was impressed by your skin care results in your current post. February is a good time to review what’s working in our lives and routines.
I love the way you describe February. I really like the idea of being allowed to take it slow and enjoy the simple things.
Hi Nicole,
I remember how my in-laws would do what they called Spring Cleaning after the holidays in January and February. Then they would take off for Florida in March, returning north for the spring holidays. Good Idea! One project a week and they were content durning the winter months.
