Visiting Vittoriano “The Wedding Cake of Rome”

An Evening At Vittoriano

We were lucky to spend an evening under the stars while visiting Vittoriano, known affectionately as “The Wedding Cake.” We toured this spectacular structure, with its breathtaking views of the entire city of Rome from high atop the numerous terraces. And we ended our delightful evening with a concert by Three Magnificent Tenors. What a night!

Monument to Victor Emmanuel II

The Vittoriano is a monument honoring Italy’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II. Italians also refer to the monument as ‘Il Vittoriano’ and ‘Altare della Patria,’ or the Altar of the Fatherland. The building is also known by several nicknames, ranging from the wedding cake, and the dentures to the typewriter.

The monument was built to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861 and to honor the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II.

An enormous bronze horseback statue of Victor Emmanuel II is centrally located in front of the Altare della Patria monument. Sculptor Enrico Chiaradia spent approximately 20 years creating this stately statue.

Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located directly under the statue of the goddess Roma. This war monument is the tomb of a 1st World War soldier whose identity is unknown. Two soldiers always stand guard as an eternal flame burns to honor all unknown soldiers who have perished in wars.

Inside The Vittoriano Complex

Inside the Vittoriano Complex, is located the Central Museum of the Risorgimento, it is dedicated to the history of Italy from the late 18th century to World War I, and the Monument to the Flags.

Up On The Roof Top

The rooftop terrace is flanked on the left and the right side by two statues of the goddess Victoria on quadrigas, which are chariots of the gods.

Carlo Fontana created the statue on the left, and celebrates Unity. The Celebration of Freedom in the statue to the right is a creation of Paolo Bartolini.

A Magnificent Trio Of Tenors

In closing, it was a magical ending to a delightful Roman evening. The sights, sounds, and stirring concert by three magnificent tenors. An authentic Italian experience to top the end of another fantastic day in Rome.

  1. We went to Rome this summer. We saw this beautiful building, and took photos of it, but we had no idea what it was. I certainly didn’t know you can go in there. Thank you for teaching us!! It sounds like a wonderful evening.

    • April,

I am sorry you missed out on touring the Vittoriano.

There is so much to see inside and a glass-style elevator to take you to the top in the rear.
There is so much to see in Rome that we need to take more trips.😉

A lot on my list that we didn’t have time to see, too.
