What I Wore On The Plane To Italy

It’s hard to believe that after six months of planning, our trip to Italy is now over. But oh, the memories will last us a lifetime. The trip was magnificent; I relive it in my mind and photos daily. And now, I am ready to begin sorting photos and want to share them with you. So I will begin with “What I wore on the plane to Italy.”

What To Wear On The Plane?

What to wear on a trip with a 24-hour travel time when flying from Orlando, Florida, to Rome, Italy? Because the trip entails a lot of eating and sleeping on the plane, comfort is my priority. And because I can get a bit messy, I decided that a dark-colored outfit like black works best for me as an airplane outfit.

I am a long-time fan of the comfort and quality of Eileen Fisher’s classic styles. And I love the unusual cut and styling of the Funnel Neck Top. IT WAS MISSION ACCOMPLISHED once I paired it with the Crepe Ankle Pants. By adding a plain Jersey Knit Top for the return flight home to my packing list, I now have my answer to “What to wear on the plane to Italy?”

While traveling, I often find myself fluctuating between being cold and warm. And that makes it complicated when deciding what to wear on the plane. Lucky for me, I have a long cashmere wrap that is the perfect traveling companion. It folds nicely into my carry-on bag and is easily accessible when needed. Plus, it works wonderfully as an extra blanket on a long overnight flight. My black wrap from J Crew is a long-time wardrobe staple and is now on sale.

In excitement about shopping for the trip, I purchased a new pair of white sneakers. My daughter-in-law advised me that with new shoes, I should wear them for about a month to break them in. So I did, and I loved them. But you know what? They were less comfortable shoes than my old Adidas Sneakers, which I wear for my daily walks. So I gave them a good wash; you can see me wearing them in Italy.

What About Accessories?

Yes, the right accessories are essential to making the travel experience pleasant. See, it’s not just what I wore on the plane, but also what I carried! By travel accessories, I am speaking of non-checked items such as tote bags which we carry with us through the airport and on the plane.

What’s In The Bags?

Since we are allowed two carry-on items, my husband, Rick, and I take full advantage, and each carries two items.

My two items consist of:

  1. A crossbody bag with our travel documents, my phone, and any items I might need quickly.
  2. Secondly, I carry my trusty Longchamp Tote. This bag has seen many destinations and is still going strong. In it, I carry my cosmetics, medications, sound-canceling headphones, and a warm wrap.

Rick’s carry-ons are:

  1. A hardcover roller carry-on. We prepare in case our checked bags arrive at a different designation than ours. It happened to us on our trip to Alaska. And it was great to have a change of clothes with us. So we pack sleepwear, outfits for the next day, and things we might need on arrival in Italy. A good roller carry-on is heaven-sent when walking through airports.
  2. Rick’s second carry-on is the Away Everywhere Bag with a top handle, crossbody strap, and trolley sleeve that perfectly secures it to his roller carry-on suitcase. Plus, as we go speeding from gate to gate and through airport security, he slips my tote bag over the handle, and away we go! Inside the Everywhere Bag, he carries our electronics and his items.

Another plus of taking a good roller bag with you is that your second set of clothing and travel outfit can be packed in your checked luggage on your return home . Now there is plenty of room for shopping!

One item that we both wear when traveling on long flights as part of our plane outfit, is compression athletic socks. You may be aware of deep vein thrombosis and feet swelling during long flights; recently, CNN posted an article explaining the benefits of wearing compression socks on extended fights.

The Journey Can Be Half The Fun!

We are lucky! Our trip went as smoothly as possible. We know that glitches and delays frequently happen as we travel. But, with planning and forethought, we try to be as prepared as possible, including thinking about our plane outfit and what to wear on the plane.

Arrival In Rome

Well, we have arrived safely. Leaving home at 7:00 AM EST on a Monday in Florida and arriving in Rome at 10:00 AM on Tuesday. Too jet-lagged to figure out the hours!

  1. Rosemary I’m excited for you these pictures are beautiful and you picked all the right accessories for your trip. I agree I’ve worked for the airline and I know to pack overnight essentials in a carry-on. Thankfully you didn’t need them though. I like your travel outfit very classy and chic. Yeah comfortable.

  2. Comfort is a the top of my list while traveling as well. I mean it’s a long flight and no one wants to be uncomfortable. Anyway, your outfit is perfect and the layering is such a good idea, because like you I experience that hot/cold back and forth. So glad everything went smoothly!

    • Bojana,

Yes, comfort is vital to navigating our way on long trips. The last thing I want to consider is whether my shoes hurt my feet or I am cold. A bit of planning ahead is the key. Of course, the more we travel, the more we know.

    • Hi Jess,

I am so happy that your trip is happening soon and I look forward to reading all about it. You are going to love your Bose noise-canceling headphones. They are terrific on overnight flights. We have been enjoying ours for several years.

  7. I always intend to plan my travel outfit and just end up dressing for my end destination or wearing my heaviest items I will wear on our holiday.
