A Little History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is very special to me because it is uniquely connected to my past. Why? Because my family comes from the town of Grafton located in the mountains of northeastern West Virginia. It is the birthplace of the very first Mother’s Day back in 1908.

As a child, I heard the story from my grandparents of how Anna Maire Jarvis was seeking a way to honor the memory of her deceased mother. She asked her church to honor all mothers as a tribute to the anniversary of her mother’s death.

In 1908 that service became the first Mother’s Day. Then in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution that declared the second Sunday in May as the official Mother’s Day, nationwide.

Annually it was one of the springtime celebrations in our community. We gifted our mothers with a carnation corsage to wear on Sunday and carnations were placed on the graves of deceased mothers on Mother’s Day.

Thinking About Mom’s Wishlist

We have come a long way in the last century. As we celebrate Mom with gift-giving, the gifts today are a huge step from a simple carnation. They are more modern gifts that are very attuned to Mom’s lifestyle.

I hope you enjoyed my little history lesson about the origins of Mother’s Day. Plus, my suggestions for Mom’s wishlist for Mother’s Day.

    • Suzana,

I must make a correction on the subject of the vacuum cleaner.

So many ladies have voiced the desire to receive the robot vacuum or Dyson. I was totally wrong!🤪

  1. 1908? Wow, I had no idea when the first Mother’s Day was, thanks! Great wishlist. Normally I am not one to ask for a vacuum but can you believe this year I want a Dyson?! I’m sure my husband won’t buy it because he’ll think I’m joking but I wouldn’t mind at all if one showed up here for me!

    • Hi Kellyann,

You are not alone in wishing for the Dyson, vacuum cleaner.

I have had so many ladies wishing for the Dyson or the Robot vacuum. I was totally off base on that one!🤪

I’m sure you will have a beautiful Mother’s Day with your boys. Enjoy!

    • Jess,

The flowers were from our table on Mother’s Day a few years ago. Back in the day when we went out to eat for the holiday.

No worries, this Mother’s Day will be beautiful with simple meals or cookouts and sweet memories of Mom’s with and not with us.

Family and love is what it’s all about.
Showing our love in the smallest of ways.
