By now most of us have at least one puffer vest in our winter wardrobe. It has been a long time closet staple and has served us well, particularly when we are living in the warmer climates with mild fall and winter days. But, the question is, “Are Puffer Vests Still In Style?” And the simple answer is, YES!
When living in milder climates, the puffer vest is an excellent way to keep warm and stylish all winter long. Here in North Florida, we do get some freezing temperatures, usually at night during our winter months. And then the sunshine will warm things up come afternoon. These vests keep the body warm and the arms free for movement. Plus, they are so lightweight that it is easy to move around without ever feeling too bundled up.
How The Puffer Vest Came To Be
A brief history of the puffer vest began with the puffer or down jacket in 1922. This first puffer was known as the “eiderdown coat” and was designed for the 1922 Everest expedition. Needless to say, it became a success.
Step forward to 1936, and it is said that Eddie Bauer invented his first puffer coat, called the Skyliner. It was brought about because he nearly froze to death while wearing a wool sweater on a fishing trip.
Nowadays, these jackets and vests are popular because they are excellent insulators. They regulate the body temperature and retain heat regardless of the weather outside. Next, remove the sleeves, and we have even more ease of movement while keeping the core: the puffer vest!
They Are Currently All The Rage!
According to an article in the Business of Fashion, this puffy vest has become a symbol of power. And costume designer Michelle Matland of HBO’s “Succession” states that the puffer vest has become a fashion choice for the ultra-wealthy. So yes, puffer vests are in style!!!
Of course we do not have to be super-wealthy to enjoy wearing our puffer vests. I’ve taken the liberty of finding a some great vests and have linked them below for you to review. And they are all on SALE!!!

This is good news for me, Rosemary … I’ve been wanting a puffer vest for ages, and for some reason I’ve procrastinated about pulling the trigger and buying one. So glad they’re still considered stylish, and I’m intrigued by the wide variety of styles now available.
This might be the nudge I needed to finally purchase one and enjoy wearing it!
If you have been hesitating, Lauren, now is the time to go for it!
As I was researching the puffer vest, I found that it has become a status symbol with the elite. The dress down with high quality or designer group.
If we are paying attention, we will see a lot of these vests!

You look fabulous in these puffer vests! And you’ve linked so many pretty vests to choose from! Have a wonderful holiday Rosemary!
What a fun post, Rosemary! I always love learning about the history of fashion trends and textiles. I have a few puffer vests but I don’t wear them often because you need a big heavy coat where I live! But I keep them around just in case because they are super practical sometimes and they never seem to go out of fashion. I love all the ways you have styled your puffer vests!
